Historical overview of education and research in southern Algeria
Kasdi Merbah University of Ouargla traces its origins back to 1988, when it was established as a Higher School for Teachers to meet the region’s need for pedagogical staff. As academic and scientific demands grew in the southeastern part of the country, the institution was transformed in 1997 into a university center bringing together several institutes and scientific disciplines.
In 2005, under an executive decree issued on September 5, the institution was elevated to a full university under the name “Kasdi Merbah University of Ouargla,” marking the beginning of a phase of comprehensive expansion in infrastructure, academic programs, and student enrollment.
Today, the university comprises ten faculties and two institutes, offering diverse programs in fields such as exact sciences and technology, engineering, economics, medicine, law and political science, languages and literature, and humanities and social sciences, in addition to agricultural and desert-related specialties that reflect the region’s characteristics.
The university also includes various scientific and pedagogical facilities, such as university libraries, research centers, multidisciplinary laboratories, lecture halls, and spaces that support innovation and entrepreneurship, making it an integrated environment for learning and creativity.
